Wednesday Wink – 8 Tips for Better Lash Retention

After attending a lash conference in March, the question came up – time and time again – about retention. What are the causes of poor lash retention?
There were some very educated and talented lash professionals talking on the subject. Each speaker had their own ideas to contribute. I have to say, it was great to be there and acquire so much knowledge! In this post, I am going to share some tips that I learned, and have found useful since. I hope you will too. 🙂

1. Humidity

The lash glue performs ideally in a humidity range of 40-60%. Get a hydrometer to keep your lash room humidity under control. This tool is a must, and inexpensive to purchase. For more information, check out this article for tips on maintaining the perfect eyelash humidity in your work space.

2. Dehumidifier

If your room is too moist, you will need to use a dehumidifier to keep your work environment moisture controlled.

3. Temperature

72-77 degrees F is where you want to be at! Make sure your temperature is in the correct range so your glue stays consistent.

4. Glue

Make sure to shake your glue thoroughly. If your glue sits for too long, the compounds can separate. You must shake for about 30-60 seconds to remix everything properly.

5. Clean Lashes

The natural lashes need to be squeaky clean. Removal of natural oils and debris is a must for proper adhesion. A primer can really help with this step. Glad Lash’s Prime and Wink is designed to prepare and prime the lashes for eyelash extension, and can be used on both natural lashes and existing eyelash extension bonds.

6. Other Chemicals

There are other chemicals in the environment that can affect your retention – ammonia being one of them. If you are working around hair color and/ or bleach, this can make your glue crystalize in several minutes. It can also affect the glue that is applied to the lashes. It will cause the drying to accelerate too quickly.

7. After Care

Please send your clients home with the correct information on how to care for their lashes. This is a simple step to educate our clients – for maximum retention results. They will be thankful to you for it! For more information, check out this after care guide for eyelash extensions.

8. Keep Lashes Clean Between Refills

We have been taught in the past that avoiding water after a lash application is a must. We were told that exposure to water too soon can mess with the lash retention. Well move over.. There is some new and amazing information I’m going to share with you… Water will not affect retention! I will give you more info about this in a future blog.
If you have any tips to up the lash retention game, then please share away in the comments section below. We love hearing about what works for you!
